The Cost of Getting Community Engagement Wrong

The developer who treats community engagement as a checkbox rather than a critical path item is essentially self-insuring against a risk they could have mitigated. That's not a values statement — it's project finance logic.
There's also the downstream effect on pipeline. A contentious fight in one county gets noticed in the next county over. Developers who earn a reputation for steamrolling local concerns find that their future projects face organized opposition before the first public meeting. What Proactive Engagement Actually Looks Like

Developers who adapt their approach now — treating community engagement as a competency rather than an obstacle — will build faster and cheaper than those who don't. The projects that move are the ones where the community understands what they're getting, trusts they've been told the truth, and sees a tangible stake in the outcome.
