Bojangles' EV Charging: A Tasty Shift in Fast Food

There's a moment when a cultural shift stops being a trend and starts being infrastructure. Bojangles just marked that moment—with fried chicken.

The Southern fast food chain, famous for its Cajun-seasoned comfort food, has launched an EV charging campaign tied to the rollout of its new Chicken Ripper sliders. It's a pairing that sounds almost absurdly on-brand: rip-and-dip chicken and plug-in vehicles, served together at a quick-service restaurant that built its reputation on biscuits and sweet tea. But underneath the marketing novelty is a signal worth paying attention to. When regional QSR chains start weaving EV infrastructure into their growth strategies, the technology has officially crossed from early adopter territory into mainstream commercial real estate calculus.

EV Charging Stations at Restaurants: From Novelty to Necessity

The math on EV charging at restaurants has always made sense on paper. Drivers need to charge. Charging takes time. Restaurants need foot traffic and dwell time. The problem, historically, was execution—who pays for the hardware, who manages the network, and who eats the electricity cost when a driver sits for 45 minutes and orders a medium coffee.

Those friction points haven't disappeared, but the economics have shifted enough that chains like Bojangles are betting the calculus now works in their favor.

EV adoption in the U.S. has accelerated meaningfully over the past three years. Electric vehicles represented roughly 8-9% of new car sales in 2024, up from under 3% in 2021. That's still a minority of the fleet, but it's a fast-growing minority concentrated in exactly the demographic cohorts that regional chains are trying to attract: younger, suburban, environmentally conscious consumers with disposable income. For a brand like Bojangles—which operates primarily across the Southeast and is pushing aggressively into new markets—that audience overlap is not accidental.

Fast food chains also have a structural advantage over standalone charging networks: they already own or control high-traffic parcels with ample parking, electrical infrastructure, and brand recognition. A Pilot Flying J or a Tesla Supercharger station has to earn its reputation from scratch. A Bojangles location already has it.

What Bojangles Is Actually Doing

The campaign pairs EV charging with the launch of the Chicken Ripper sliders—a deliberate co-marketing move designed to drive attention to both. The specifics of the charging infrastructure, including hardware partners, charging speeds, and station counts per location, weren't fully detailed in the announcement. That gap matters.

There's a significant difference between Level 2 AC charging (the kind that adds roughly 20-30 miles of range per hour—useful for a long lunch, insufficient for a highway stop) and DC fast charging (which can deliver 100+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes). The type of charger Bojangles deploys will determine whether this is a genuine infrastructure play or a marketing activation dressed up as sustainability.

Chains that have gone deep on real charging infrastructure—Wawa comes to mind, along with certain Sheetz locations—have invested in DC fast charging alongside their food operations. That's the model that actually changes driver behavior and builds location loyalty. If Bojangles follows that path at scale, the Chicken Ripper launch will look, in hindsight, like the beginning of something real.

The partnership and technology stack behind the campaign also remain opaque from the announcement. Whether Bojangles is working with a charging network operator like Electrify America, Blink, or EVgo—or managing hardware directly—shapes everything from revenue sharing to customer experience to how the stations appear on navigation apps. EV drivers don't find chargers by driving around. They plan routes around charging availability on PlugShare, Google Maps, and in-vehicle navigation. Visibility on those platforms is table stakes.

What Customers and the Environment Actually Get

For EV drivers, the value proposition of charging while dining is real—if the execution delivers. The ideal scenario: you pull in, plug in, order food, eat at a comfortable pace, and leave with meaningfully more range than you arrived with. No wasted time. No separate trip to a charging station. The meal and the charge happen in parallel.

That's a qualitatively different experience than the current alternative for many drivers, which involves hunting for a functional public charger, hoping it's not occupied or broken, and standing in a parking lot waiting. Reliable charging at a familiar, welcoming restaurant location doesn't just add convenience—it removes anxiety, which is the single biggest barrier to EV adoption that isn't about purchase price.

The environmental math is also real, even if it's sometimes overstated in corporate announcements. Every EV mile driven on the U.S. grid produces fewer lifecycle emissions than the equivalent gasoline mile—and that gap widens as the grid gets cleaner. Bojangles making it easier for EV drivers to charge on long trips or during daily routines is a measurable, if modest, contribution to that transition.

What's more interesting from a sustainability standpoint is the signal this sends to Bojangles' franchise operators and competitors. Corporate sustainability commitments at QSR chains have historically been about packaging, supply chain, and energy efficiency at the building level. Adding EV charging infrastructure to the conversation changes the scope of what "fast food sustainability" means in practice.

Where This Goes Next

The fast food industry moves in waves. One chain tests something that works—drive-through lanes, mobile ordering, loyalty apps—and within a few years, it's standard across the category. EV charging at restaurants is in the early innings of that same cycle.

McDonald's has piloted EV charging at select European locations. Starbucks partnered with Volvo to install chargers along a cross-country highway corridor. Whole Foods, Target, and Ikea have all expanded charging capacity in their parking lots with notable success. The data from those deployments consistently shows that drivers who charge on-site spend more time in the store and spend more money per visit.

If Bojangles' campaign generates the kind of customer engagement and dwell-time data that other retailers have seen, expect the program to scale—and expect competitors to follow.

The Southeast, where Bojangles has its deepest footprint, is also one of the faster-growing EV markets in the country. Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee have all seen significant EV registration growth, partly driven by manufacturing investment (Hyundai's massive Metaplant in Georgia, Volkswagen's Chattanooga facility, the Blue Oval City complex in Tennessee) and partly by falling vehicle prices. The regional timing is not bad.

The honest caveat is that a marketing campaign tied to a slider launch is not the same as a capital commitment to charging infrastructure. Bojangles will need to follow the announcement with specifics: how many locations, what charging speeds, what the rollout timeline looks like, and how they'll handle the operational realities of maintaining hardware that doesn't sell french fries.

Those details will determine whether this becomes a case study in how fast food chains can meaningfully accelerate EV infrastructure—or a footnote in the long history of green-flavored marketing that didn't quite stick.

For now, the move deserves credit for what it is: a regional chain signaling to its customers, its franchisees, and its competitors that EV infrastructure is no longer a niche consideration. It belongs in the same conversation as the menu, the parking lot, and the drive-through lane. That conversation, once started, tends to go somewhere.
