Proximity to transmission infrastructure matters enormously—a beautiful, sun-drenched site five miles from a substation with available capacity is worth far more than one twenty miles from an overloaded line, even if the solar resource is better. Projects that engage communities as partners rather than obstacles to be managed tend to permit faster, face fewer legal challenges, and operate with less friction for their entire useful life.


Risk Management and Financing Approaches That Actually Work

The most effective risk management in solar development is front-loaded. Spending more on early-stage due diligence—environmental assessments, title searches, interconnection pre-application meetings, preliminary engineering—reduces the probability of expensive surprises downstream.

Insurance products for construction and operational risks have become more sophisticated. Delay-in-startup coverage, equipment performance guarantees from manufacturers, and revenue insurance for merchant projects all exist and can be structured into project financing. They cost money upfront, but they can make the difference between a project surviving an adverse event and a project defaulting on its debt.

On the financing side, the post-IRA environment has created genuine innovation. Direct pay provisions allow tax-exempt entities—municipalities, rural electric cooperatives—to access tax credits directly, opening new markets. Transferability of tax credits has brought in new categories of investors. Community Development Financial Institutions and green banks are providing capital in markets that traditional project finance lenders have avoided.

The practical implication: the financing toolkit available to developers is larger than it was three years ago, but using it effectively requires advisors who understand the nuances. A rural cooperative pursuing a community solar project has different options than an independent power producer building a 200 MW utility-scale facility—and the optimal structure looks very different.


Where the Industry Goes Next

Several trends are reshaping what solar development looks like in practice.

Agrivoltaic development—combining solar generation with agricultural production on the same land—is moving from pilot projects to meaningful scale. Sheep grazing under solar panels is already common. Row crops grown under elevated panel arrays are in commercial testing. This approach directly addresses one of the most persistent community objections: that solar takes farmland out of production.

Battery storage co-location is rapidly shifting from optional to essential in many markets. Standalone solar projects face merchant price risk during peak generation hours as more solar comes onto the grid. Storage changes the dispatch profile and can dramatically improve project economics in markets where time-of-use pricing creates value for controllable capacity.

And offshore solar—floating photovoltaic systems on reservoirs and other water bodies—is gaining traction in land-constrained markets, particularly in Asia, with early projects appearing in Europe and the Middle East.

The developers who will capture the most value in the next decade aren't necessarily the ones with the lowest panel costs—they're the ones who can navigate regulatory complexity, build community trust, and structure creative financing solutions in markets where the easy projects are already built.
