Microgrids combining solar, battery storage, and backup generation are being deployed at military installations, hospitals, and other critical infrastructure facilities to ensure power resilience against grid outages, extreme weather events, and potential cybersecurity threats. The market for critical infrastructure microgrids is projected to exceed $8 billion by 2028.
The Department of Defense has identified energy resilience as a national security priority and is investing heavily in microgrids at military bases. The Army, Navy, and Air Force have collectively planned or deployed microgrids at over 50 installations, with total capacity exceeding 500 MW. These systems typically combine solar PV, battery storage, diesel generators, and sophisticated control systems that can island the installation from the grid during emergencies.
Healthcare facilities represent another major microgrid market. The Joint Commission, which accredits US hospitals, now requires facilities to maintain 96 hours of emergency power capability. Traditional diesel generator backup is being supplemented and, in some cases, replaced by solar-plus-storage microgrids that provide both daily cost savings and extended emergency backup.
The economics of critical infrastructure microgrids have improved dramatically. Federal funding programs, including FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program and the DOD's Energy Resilience and Conservation Investment Program (ERCIP), provide grants covering 50-75% of project costs. IRA tax credits further reduce the remaining costs, making payback periods as short as 3-5 years for properly designed systems.
Third-party ownership models are becoming common in the microgrid space. Energy-as-a-service providers install, own, and operate microgrid systems under long-term contracts, providing resilience benefits without requiring capital investment from the host facility. Companies like Scale Microgrids, Ameresco, and Schneider Electric are leaders in this model.
