How Climate Affects Solar Module Performance

Most solar buyers focus on panel efficiency ratings and price per watt. Far fewer ask the question that actually determines long-term returns: how fast will these panels degrade *where I'm putting them*?

New research from the University of New South Wales is forcing that conversation. The findings confirm what seasoned project developers have suspected for years — solar module degradation isn't a fixed number you can pull from a spec sheet. It varies dramatically based on where a system is installed, how it's designed, and what climate stresses it faces year after year. The implications for project economics, warranty assumptions, and system design are significant.

Understanding Solar Module Degradation

Every PV panel loses output over time. That's not a flaw — it's physics. The question is how much, how fast, and what's driving it.

Degradation rate is one of the most consequential variables in a solar project's financial model, yet it's often treated as a boilerplate input. Most manufacturers publish a standard linear degradation warranty — typically 0.5% to 0.7% per year — and developers plug that number in without much scrutiny. A 25-year project modeled at 0.5%/year versus 0.8%/year can show a meaningful difference in lifetime energy yield, which flows directly into IRR and debt service coverage.

The physical mechanisms behind degradation are worth understanding. UV exposure degrades encapsulants and backsheets, causing discoloration and delamination. Thermal cycling — repeated expansion and contraction as modules heat up and cool down — stresses solder joints and cell interconnects, eventually causing microcracks. Humidity enables corrosion of metallization and promotes potential-induced degradation (PID), where voltage gradients drive sodium ions from the glass into the cell, eroding performance. Soiling, mechanical loading from wind and snow, and UV-induced photodegradation of the polymer layers all compound the problem over time.

None of these stressors operate in isolation. And none of them are uniformly distributed across a map.

Climate: The Underestimated Variable in Solar Performance

The UNSW research zeroes in on something the industry has known qualitatively but rarely quantified rigorously: location isn't just a backdrop for solar performance — it's an active driver of module stress and degradation rate.

UV irradiance is the obvious factor. Higher UV doses accelerate photooxidation in encapsulants and polymeric backsheets, breaking down material bonds faster than laboratory accelerated aging tests typically capture. This is particularly relevant because standard IEC certification tests — the baseline for most module qualification — use controlled UV exposure levels that may not reflect what panels actually experience in high-altitude or equatorial environments.

Temperature matters in two distinct ways. High ambient temperatures raise operating cell temperatures, which reduces efficiency in real-time and accelerates chemical degradation processes. But it's the *delta* — the daily temperature swing — that drives thermal fatigue. A module in Phoenix, Arizona, might see cell temperatures swing 50°C or more between a cold desert night and peak afternoon operation. Each cycle is a mechanical stress event. Accumulate thousands of those over a 25-year project life, and microcracks become a real concern.

Humidity introduces its own failure modes. Moisture infiltration through the backsheet or edge seals promotes corrosion of busbars and cell contacts and provides the electrolytic pathway needed for PID to occur at scale. High-humidity environments also support biological growth — algae, moss, and biofilm — that increases soiling losses and can trap moisture against the module surface.

What makes climate stress genuinely complex is that these factors interact. High humidity combined with high temperature is more corrosive than either alone. High UV combined with thermal cycling degrades encapsulants faster than either stressor in isolation. Real-world environments are multivariate in ways that single-factor testing doesn't capture.

Tropical and Desert Environments: Two Different Flavors of Punishment

The UNSW research specifically flags tropical and desert regions as facing the highest cumulative stress — but for meaningfully different reasons.

Tropical climates — think Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, coastal Brazil — combine intense UV, persistent high humidity, and elevated temperatures year-round. There's no seasonal reprieve. Modules in these environments face continuous moisture exposure, which makes edge seal integrity and backsheet moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) critical selection criteria. A module designed to standard specifications may meet all IEC requirements and still underperform materially in Kuala Lumpur compared to Munich.

Desert environments present a different profile. Aridity suppresses the humidity-driven failure modes but compensates with extreme UV intensity, very high peak temperatures, and punishing thermal cycling. The Atacama Desert in Chile, the Mojave in California, and the Middle East's solar belt all push module materials toward their thermal and UV limits. Dust and soiling are also major issues — desert installations can see performance losses of 1–6% per month without regular cleaning, according to industry data from projects in the MENA region.

The practical upshot is that a module optimized for Germany's mild, overcast climate may be genuinely unsuitable for a utility-scale project in Gujarat or Queensland. Yet procurement teams routinely spec modules based on efficiency and price without systematically accounting for climate-specific degradation risk.

Rethinking Design and Testing for Project Locations

The research from UNSW points toward a clear actionable conclusion: climate-specific testing and design need to become standard practice, not an afterthought.

For testing, this means pushing beyond IEC 61215 and IEC 61730 baseline certifications. Climate-specific testing protocols — extended damp heat testing for tropical deployments, elevated UV dose testing for high-altitude or desert projects, and more aggressive thermal cycling sequences for high-delta environments — provide a more realistic picture of how a module will actually hold up. Some Tier 1 manufacturers now offer products tested to these elevated standards; that differentiation is worth paying attention to during procurement.

On the design side, several levers matter. Racking and mounting configurations that maximize airflow beneath modules can meaningfully reduce operating temperatures — sometimes by 5–10°C, which compounds favorably over decades. Frame-free module designs eliminate the corrosion-prone metal-glass interfaces that moisture exploits. Bifacial modules on white or light-colored ground cover run cooler than conventional configurations. And in high-humidity environments, selecting modules with demonstrated low MVTR backsheets or glass-glass construction significantly reduces moisture infiltration risk.

For developers and asset managers, the implication extends to financial modeling. Climate-appropriate degradation rate assumptions — informed by actual field data from comparable environments — should replace generic manufacturer warranties as the primary input. NREL's PV degradation database and resources like the PVRD portal are increasingly useful for calibrating these assumptions against real-world performance data from similar climates.

The Future of Solar Technology

The industry is not standing still on this problem. Perovskite-silicon tandem cells, widely expected to be the next dominant commercial technology, present new stability challenges — perovskites are notoriously sensitive to moisture and heat — which means climate resilience will be an even more pressing engineering priority as these modules move toward commercialization.

Encapsulant chemistry is advancing. Polyolefin encapsulants are increasingly replacing EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) in premium modules because they exhibit lower moisture permeability and better UV stability. Glass-glass module construction, once a premium niche, is becoming more cost-competitive and is now the default choice for many utility-scale developers in demanding climates.

Digital monitoring and AI-assisted degradation modeling are also changing how asset managers track performance. Machine learning models trained on large operational datasets can now flag anomalous degradation patterns earlier, distinguishing soiling losses from genuine module degradation and enabling more targeted maintenance intervention.

The fundamental insight from the UNSW research isn't complicated: solar panels are not climate-agnostic equipment. A gigawatt of solar installed in coastal Vietnam faces categorically different physical stresses than the same gigawatt installed in Nevada. Treating them identically — in procurement, in testing, in financial modeling — is a risk that compounds over 25 years.

The developers and asset managers who price that risk correctly will outperform those who don't.
