Early movers in alternative fuels do face a genuine challenge: the green fuel supply chain is still nascent. Green methanol and green ammonia cost significantly more per energy unit than conventional bunker fuel today. But the gap is narrowing, and the price trajectory for fossil fuels — particularly when you price in volatility and political risk — looks increasingly unfavorable over any 10-15 year planning horizon.
What Shipping Companies Should Actually Do
The path forward isn't one-size-fits-all, and anyone selling a single silver bullet for shipping decarbonization is oversimplifying a genuinely complex engineering and logistics challenge. But there are clear strategic priorities emerging for operators who want to get ahead of this.
Fleet modernization with dual-fuel capability is the most pragmatic near-term move. Investing in energy efficiency remains the highest-return, lowest-risk decarbonization strategy available right now.
