Dynamic line rating (DLR) technology, which uses sensors and weather data to calculate the real-time capacity of transmission lines, is among the most impactful GETs. Traditional static line ratings are based on worst-case weather assumptions, typically underestimating actual capacity by 20-30%. By using real-time data, utilities can safely transmit more power on existing lines, reducing curtailment of renewable energy and deferring expensive transmission upgrades.

FERC has been actively promoting GETs adoption. Order 881 requires transmission providers to use ambient-adjusted ratings rather than static ratings, effectively mandating a move toward dynamic line ratings. Several utilities including American Electric Power, Commonwealth Edison, and Ameren have deployed DLR systems on constrained transmission corridors with positive results.

Advanced inverters on solar and storage installations are also playing a critical role in grid management. Modern smart inverters can provide voltage regulation, frequency response, and reactive power support — services traditionally provided only by conventional generators. This capability enables solar plants to contribute to grid stability rather than being passive generators that create integration challenges.

The investment opportunity in smart grid technology is significant. Bloomberg estimates that global smart grid investment will exceed $100 billion annually by 2030. For infrastructure investors, companies developing and deploying GETs, advanced inverters, and grid management software represent attractive growth opportunities in a market with strong regulatory tailwinds.
