Sodium-ion battery technology is emerging as a credible alternative to lithium-ion for stationary energy storage applications, offering lower costs, improved safety, and freedom from supply chain concerns associated with lithium and cobalt. Several manufacturers have begun commercial production, and early utility-scale deployments are showing promising results.

CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer, began commercial production of its first-generation sodium-ion cells in 2024, achieving energy densities of 160 Wh/kg — lower than lithium-ion's 200-260 Wh/kg but sufficient for stationary applications where weight is not a primary concern. The company reports manufacturing costs approximately 30% below comparable lithium-ion cells.

For grid-scale energy storage, sodium-ion offers several distinct advantages. The technology operates safely across a wider temperature range (-40°C to 60°C), eliminates the risk of thermal runaway that necessitates expensive fire suppression systems in lithium-ion installations, and uses abundant materials with stable, geographically diverse supply chains.

US-based Natron Energy has taken a different approach with its Prussian blue-based sodium-ion chemistry, targeting data center UPS and industrial applications. The company's batteries achieve over 50,000 charge-discharge cycles — roughly 10x the cycle life of lithium-ion — making them economically attractive for high-cycle applications.

The investment community has taken notice. Sodium-ion battery startups have raised over $2 billion in venture capital and growth equity funding in the past two years. Several companies are planning US manufacturing facilities to take advantage of IRA production tax credits, which apply equally to sodium-ion and lithium-ion technologies.
