Solar Panel Recycling Industry Emerges as Panels Reach End of Life
The solar panel recycling industry is scaling rapidly as early installations reach end of life, with recoverable materials valued at over $15 billion in the US alone.
As the first generation of utility-scale solar installations approaches the end of its 25-30 year operational life, a new industry is emerging to handle the recycling and repurposing of millions of solar panels. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) estimates that cumulative solar panel waste could reach 78 million tonnes globally by 2050.
In the United States, approximately 500,000 tonnes of solar panels are expected to reach end of life by 2030, growing to over 10 million tonnes by 2050. This creates both an environmental challenge and a significant business opportunity. The recoverable materials — including silicon, silver, copper, and aluminum — have an estimated value of over $15 billion.
Several companies are scaling recycling operations to meet this growing need. SOLARCYCLE, backed by significant venture capital funding, has opened the largest solar panel recycling facility in the US, capable of processing over 10 million panels annually. The company's proprietary process recovers over 95% of panel materials, including high-purity silicon suitable for reuse in new panels.
For solar project developers, end-of-life panel management is becoming an important consideration in project planning. Several states now require decommissioning plans and financial assurance for solar installations, adding to project costs but creating a predictable revenue stream for recycling companies.
The economics of panel recycling are improving as processing technology advances and the volume of available panels increases. Current recycling costs of $15-25 per panel are expected to decrease as the industry scales, while rising commodity prices for silver and silicon improve the value of recovered materials.
