Swissgrid has opened bidding for a three-year services contract covering the installation of new server racks across its data centers, along with the supply of supporting materials: fiber optic cabling, copper cabling, racks, and protection devices. On the surface, it's a routine procurement exercise. The Operator Behind the Tender
Swissgrid isn't a typical enterprise IT buyer. Founded in 2006, the company bears responsibility for operating and expanding Switzerland's 6,700-kilometer extra-high-voltage transmission network β the backbone infrastructure that keeps the lights on for the entire country. Its 800 employees, drawn from 39 nations, manage a system that's increasingly strained by surging electricity demand from data centers, heat pumps, and electric vehicles.
The firm has operated two data centers since 2018, established in the period following its headquarters relocation from Laufenburg to Aarau. FNT Command is an enterprise-grade IT infrastructure management platform used by some of Europe's largest telecoms and utilities. Any contractor bidding on this work needs to be comfortable operating within that documentation ecosystem β it's not a casual ask, and it signals the level of operational rigor Swissgrid expects from its partners.
What the Contract Actually Covers
The tender is structured as a three-year engagement, covering both labor and materials. Fiber optic and copper cabling, server racks, and protection devices are explicitly included in scope. Swissgrid has not disclosed the specific data center locations involved or the total number of servers being added β which is par for the course with critical infrastructure operators that maintain strict operational security.
What the tender does reveal is that Swissgrid views its data center capacity as a living, evolving asset rather than a static deployment. A three-year contract with materials supply built in suggests ongoing refresh cycles, not a one-time build-out. For contractors, that's a meaningful distinction: this is relationship infrastructure work, not a project sprint.

The computational demands of modeling, monitoring, and optimizing an extra-high-voltage network at scale aren't trivial. When Swissgrid upgrades its server infrastructure, it's directly enabling its capacity to manage the larger grid transformation underway.
There's also a historical footnote worth flagging. The former Swissgrid headquarters building in Laufenburg β the site of its original data operations β was eventually sold to FlexBase Group, which partnered with Swiss construction firm Erne to build a 500MW battery storage system on the property. That's a striking example of energy infrastructure evolution: a grid operator's old headquarters becoming a utility-scale storage facility. It underscores the pace of change in Swiss energy infrastructure and the premium being placed on every available site.
What This Means for the Swiss Data Center Market

Firms that can demonstrate familiarity with FNT Command or comparable DCIM/ITIM platforms, documented experience in fiber optic installation within live data center environments, and the logistical capacity to support ongoing materials supply across multiple Swiss sites will be in the strongest position.
The three-year contract horizon also suggests Swissgrid is looking for a partner, not just a vendor. Pricing, yes β but also operational reliability and the ability to scale engagement as the underlying infrastructure requirements evolve. Given that Swissgrid's own grid management complexity is set to increase substantially through 2040, the workload flowing through its data centers is almost certainly going to grow with it.
Switzerland's grid is under pressure from every direction. The operator managing it is quietly ensuring its own data infrastructure can keep up. For contractors with the right credentials, this tender is worth a serious look β and for the broader market, it's a useful signal that even the most traditionally conservative infrastructure operators are accelerating their internal technology investments to match what's coming.
