The communities waking up to find a 400-megawatt campus proposed next door aren't wrong to ask hard questions. The officials who support development without ensuring those questions get answered aren't serving their constituents. And the industry that frames all local concern as obstruction is leaving value — and goodwill — on the table.
Getting this balance right isn't optional. The buildout of AI and cloud infrastructure over the next decade will require hundreds of new large-scale facilities across North America. Whether that buildout happens in ways that strengthen or fracture community trust will depend largely on decisions being made right now — in zoning boards, planning commissions, and developer strategy meetings that most people will never hear about.
