Solar operators are adapting with improved design standards, weather monitoring technology, and alternative risk transfer strategies.
Hail damage has emerged as the most costly peril for solar installations. A single severe hailstorm can cause $50-$100 million in damage across a large solar portfolio, destroying glass-covered modules and damaging tracking systems. Several hailstorms in Texas and the upper Midwest in recent years have produced industry losses exceeding $1 billion collectively.
Insurance premiums for utility-scale solar have increased 40-80% over the past three years, with some portfolios seeing even larger increases.
