The Atacama Desert is one of the most solar-irradiant places on Earth. However, it faces a common issue that affects every sun-drenched grid: the sun goes down. For years, Chile's northern renewable energy boom produced power in abundance during daylight hours and almost nothing after dark, driving spot prices down during the day and leaving the grid exposed at night. Zelestra's Aurora project is a direct answer to that structural problem — and the scale of it matters.

On May 11, Spanish developer and IPP Zelestra announced it had energized a 1GWh battery energy storage system in the Atacama, paired with 220MW of solar PV generation. That combination — call it a hybrid project — isn't novel in concept. But executing it at this scale, in this market, with this financing structure tells you something important about where Latin American energy infrastructure is heading.

What Zelestra Actually Built

The Aurora project isn't a solar farm with a token battery bolted on. The 1GWh of storage is a genuine grid asset — large enough to meaningfully shift generation from midday peaks into evening demand windows. At 220MW of solar PV paired with 1GWh of storage, the ratio implies roughly 4-5 hours of full-capacity discharge, positioning Aurora to participate in evening ancillary services markets and meet the terms of structured PPAs rather than simply chasing volatile spot prices.

The technology backbone comes from Sungrow, the China-based OEM that supplied both the PowerTitan 2.0 BESS and a 1+X modular inverter for the solar array. The PowerTitan 2.0 integrates a 5MWh battery with a 2.5MW power conversion system inside a single 20-foot container — a form factor that simplifies logistics and commissioning in remote desert environments where site access isn't trivial. To reach 1GWh at the Aurora site, that means roughly 200 of those containers operating in coordination. Sungrow has since launched the PowerTitan 3.0, a 30-foot system claiming the title of the world's largest BESS by capacity and energy density — but Aurora was ordered on 2.0 specs, locked in May 2025, before the newer product shipped.

Zelestra's in-house EPC team handled engineering, procurement, and construction — a detail worth noting. Developers who own their EPC capability control their timelines and margins differently than those who subcontract. It also means Zelestra carries more technical risk, but the flip side is operational knowledge that compounds across future projects.

Why Hybrid Projects Change the Economics

A standalone solar farm in Chile's spot market faces a brutal problem: curtailment. The north of the country has been generating so much solar during midday that prices regularly touch zero or go negative. Developers who sold power under node-priced contracts have watched revenues erode. Storage doesn't just solve a technical problem — it solves a commercial one.

By shifting generation into higher-value hours, hybrid systems like Aurora can support PPAs with creditworthy offtakers at economics that pure-solar projects can no longer credibly deliver. Zelestra demonstrated this directly: in March 2025, they signed a long-term PPA with Abastible, Chile's gas distribution company. That's a sophisticated industrial buyer choosing to lock in renewable-plus-storage power as a hedge against fuel price exposure — not a utility buying cheap solar as a compliance move.

That PPA was almost certainly the instrument that made the financing possible. When Zelestra reached financial close in June 2025, it secured US$282 million from Natixis CIB and BNP Paribas, with a VAT facility from BCI. Getting two major European infrastructure lenders comfortable with a BESS-heavy project in an emerging market requires a contracted revenue stream. The Abastible PPA was the key that unlocked the capital stack.

Reading the $282 Million Financing

$282 million for a 1GWh/220MW project implies a capital intensity of roughly $1,100-1,200 per kWh of storage plus solar — a figure that reflects both the cost of the Sungrow hardware and the premium of building in remote desert terrain. Whether that's cheap or expensive depends on what you're comparing it to.

US utility-scale BESS projects were pricing at $250-350 per kWh of storage in 2024-2025. Chile adds logistics costs, import tariffs, and the complexity of grid interconnection in a market that's still developing its transmission backbone. The involvement of Natixis CIB and BNP Paribas signals that European project finance capital is actively seeking yield in Latin American clean energy infrastructure — which has implications well beyond this single project. When Tier 1 lenders enter a market at scale, developers behind them benefit from established legal precedents, lower due diligence costs, and compressed risk premiums on future deals.

The Atacama Is Getting Crowded

Aurora isn't operating in isolation. The Atacama has become one of the most active BESS deployment corridors in the Southern Hemisphere, and the activity in just the past several months illustrates the pace.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners broke ground on its 300MW/1,500MWh Patache BESS — a system that, at full build-out, will dwarf Aurora's storage capacity by a factor of 1.5. Sonnedix signed three PPAs for its 117MW/643.8MWh Sonnedix Librillo project with Copec EMOAC, tying storage to one of Chile's largest industrial conglomerates. Innergex and Prevalon Energy energized the 42MW/210MWh San Andrés II project in the same Atacama region.

What's driving this cluster effect? Chile's grid operator has been aggressive about connecting storage to its ancillary services market, and the country's long-term energy transition targets create regulatory visibility that investors need. The Atacama's solar resource is exceptional — capacity factors north of 30% are routine — making it the obvious pairing point for storage that needs cheap electrons to be economic.

The insider observation here: Chile is also serving as a proving ground for Chinese battery manufacturers looking to build bankability records in international markets. Sungrow's presence in Aurora, at this scale and with this financing structure, is a reference project that will appear in every future proposal Sungrow makes to a Latin American developer or lender. Both parties benefit.

What Comes Next

Zelestra says final commissioning steps are underway, with full commercial operations expected within weeks of the May announcement. The gap between energization and commercial operation matters — it's when the project moves from construction finance to operating mode, revenue begins flowing under the PPA, and the debt service clock starts ticking in earnest.

The broader question Aurora raises is whether 1GWh becomes the new floor for serious hybrid project development in the region. A year ago, 200-300MWh felt like meaningful scale. Projects like Patache and Aurora have reset expectations quickly. Developers who were underwriting 500MWh projects are now pressure-testing their models at twice that scale — because offtakers want longer duration, lenders want larger contracted revenue streams, and grid operators want assets that can provide meaningful system services.

The Atacama's solar-storage buildout is not a regional curiosity — it's a template for how resource-rich, grid-constrained markets around the world should be thinking about energy transition infrastructure. Chile got the hard parts right early: competitive PPAs, a structured financing market, and regulatory openness to storage participation. The rest of Latin America — and frankly, several markets in Southeast Asia and Africa — is watching closely.

For developers and investors tracking where capital will move over the next 24 months, the Atacama corridor is no longer emerging. It's arrived.
